Recorded talk

Every biennial, Award artists sit down and tell us about their background and creative practice. They take us on a journey through submission, selection, and presentation of their work. In this series, we look back at artists from the 2023 Biennial as we await the announcement of the Award artists for 2025.

Boundary End by Nicola Tassie

This work comprises 60 individual thrown ceramic forms tightly arranged together. It questions the ideas of the spaces we inhabit and the boundaries we enforce on people and communities. In her artist talk, Nicola reflects on how limited space in her studio led to her creatively stacking pots together. This led to the early concepts for Boundary End and was the basis of developing her sculptural work. She then talks about balancing exhibition work with production pottery.

About the artist

Nicola initially studied painting at the Central School of Art and Design. She then took up ceramics soon after completing her degree and established a studio in Hoxton, London. Her practice includes both wheel-thrown editions of functional pots as well as more sculptural works which explore the expanding boundaries of ceramic form. Her work has been exhibited across the UK and the USA.
