BCB 2023 Artist Talks – Jasmine Simpson

Media category
Recorded talk

Every biennial, Award artists sit down and tell us about their background and creative practice. They take us on a journey through submission, selection, and presentation of their work. In this series, we look back at artists from the 2023 Biennial as we await the announcement of the Award artists for 2025.

There are devils in my house by Jasmine Simpson

This work took inspiration from 16th Century Hellmouth fireplaces, often featuring ceramic sculptures of little devils. Amidst a mental health crisis, we are facing our demons and addressing how we can move beyond them. Through her talk, you will better understand Jasmine’s creative process and how she plans her pieces. She recounts how visits to Jingdezhen became a huge source of inspiration in her surface decoration. Finally, she takes us behind the scenes in the building of a Hellmouth fireplace and her devilish pots.

About the artist

Jasmine grew up, studied and continues to work in Stoke-on-Trent, which greatly influences her work and use of traditional ceramic techniques. She is fascinated by the way humans have represented themselves with animal imagery throughout history. For her, ceramics provides a blank canvas that can take any form, revealing spirit-like animals behind layers of ink, oxides and stains.
