BCB 2023 Artist Talks – Rebecca Griffiths
Every biennial, Award artists sit down and tell us about their background and creative practice. They take us on a journey through submission, selection, and presentation of their work. In this series, we look back at artists from the 2023 Biennial as we await the announcement of the Award artists for 2025.
OUTAGE by Rebecca Griffiths
The imagining of a future landscape in which we dredge up remnants of the nuclear power industry from the North Sea. Inspired by the real impact of nuclear megastructures on our delicate coastal environment. In her artist residency at Red House, Rebecca had the chance to tour the Sizewell B power station. She describes her experience at the residency, gathering ideas and materials to begin creating the concept of the work. We hear about her creative process involving cardboard models and the extensive glaze testing done to get her desired surface.
About the artist
Rebecca is a London-based artist who uses clay to wrestle with the structures of the designed world. In her work, she explores notions of time, ambiguity and growth. She designs and constructs industrial forms, miscellaneous tools and structures before subjecting them to instability and flux. In 2022-2023, she was awarded the Red House Residency supported by the Royal Society of sculptors and Britten Pears Arts.
