Volunteer call-out for Rammed Earth Playscape

We are looking for a team of volunteers who are interested in learning more about rammed earth through practical experience. You will be helping to create modular test pieces for an urban playscape.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about this ancient and environmentally sustainable building method. You will also develop practical skills and knowledge about the use of rammed earth in contemporary settings. Rammed earth is the process of building by compressing a clay-rich mixture of aggregate and other earth into formwork to create a durable structure. It has been in use for millennia to construct buildings for civic and domestic use. The project is also using construction spoil to explore playful and innovative uses for this building waste product.

The playscape that you will be building is co-designed by Tuckey Design Studio and architecture students from University of Staffordshire, and will be exhibited at the 2025 British Ceramics Biennial.

You will be working with architect and international rammed earth construction specialist, Sami Akkach, and the project lead artist, Sarah Fraser.

Due to the nature of the rammed earth construction method, the work will be physically demanding. Please contact us if you would like further information about the nature of the work. We will make reasonable adjustments where possible. This work will involve working in the vicinity of construction equipment which can be potentially dangerous. Health and safety briefing and relevant personal protective equipment will be provided. You must be over 18 and able to demonstrate the ability to work with due care for yourself and others.
