BCB 2023 Artist Talks – Copper Sounds
Every biennial, Award artists sit down and tell us about their background and creative practice. They take us on a journey through submission, selection, and presentation of their work. In this series, we look back at artists from the 2023 Biennial as we await the announcement of the Award artists for 2025.
Sequenced Ceramics by Copper Sounds
This immersive installation explores clay’s acoustic and resonant properties. It is an intimate sonic installation in which ceramics are played by mechanical beaters, resulting in hypnotic sound patterns that flow in and out of each other. Artists Isaac Stacey and Sonny Lee Lightfoot take us through their history as creatives. We hear about the origins of Copper Sounds and how they built up their reputation as musicians playing ceramic objects. They speak about their practice, how it has evolved over the years as well as what they are planning to explore for the future.
About the Artists
Copper Sounds is a Bristol-based duo. They use traditional and contemporary processes to explore the acoustic and resonant properties of clay. Their work is about the unknown- trying things out, failing, learning and always thinking about the physical and visual nature of sound.
The ceramics they make tell the story of their process and act as milestones of their journey through sound. Like clay, they see sound as a malleable material. In a unique way of working with ceramics, they play the objects they make.
