Clay Researcher
Claire Baily is a London-based artist, researcher, and educator whose work navigates the intersections of art, sustainability, and material innovation. She is currently leading a 19-month research initiative in partnership with BCB and HS2. This initiative will explore the creative re-use of clay extracted from UK construction spoil. This project looks at the opportunities and challenges of transforming this waste material into a scalable, sustainable resource evaluating the potential implications and environmental impact this may have. The findings will culminate in a public conference during the 2025 Biennial, featuring a cross-disciplinary panel of key speakers.
With a practice deeply rooted in material processes, Claire considers what a sustainable art practice might be in the context of the climate emergency. Her current research focuses on the development of bio-based materials and processes as viable, sustainable alternatives to petrochemical-driven methods. Alongside her practice, Claire leads the Sculpture Art Practice Area at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She is also an active member of the Centre of Art & Ecology, contributing to broader conversations about the role of art in ecological resilience.
Claire’s work has been exhibited both in the UK and internationally, and she has been awarded a residency with Artangel’s Making Time programme in 2025.
