#ClayAtHome Growing Cultures

Growing Cultures: covering science, health and the world of bacteria

Inspired by the ceramic penicillin culture vessels, originally produced in Stoke-on-Trent, Growing Cultures explores the connections between health, medicine and history. Learn about the discovery of penicillin, the development of antibiotics and different types of good and bad bacteria from our downloadable worksheet, then have a go at making your own bacteria cell from clay or salt dough.

Watch our Salt Dough video for instructions.

About Growing Cultures

Growing Cultures is a collaborative art and science project. We worked with artists, local health organisations, community groups and schools and used clay to explore the history of penicillin and the impacts of antibiotic resistance today. A visual prompt and starting point for this project was a ceramic culture-growing vessel made in Stoke-on-Trent. This vessel was key in enabling the mass production of penicillin.
